Cheap 50mm f1.8 video lens for under $50

Indie filmmakers are always on the hunt for the best camera gear deals.
Lenses are a big part of shooting HDSLR video/film. They are also very expensive.
One lens that is known for its exceptional cinematic look, large aperture and shallow depth of field is the 50mm prime lens.
Canon makes 2 models that are ideal for indie budget filmmakers.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Nikons equivalent is:
Nikon Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G
Nikon Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G

These lenses still cost a great deal if you are on a tight budget. Last year I wrote about a lens from a 25 year old Praktica MTL3. The Pentacon 1.8/50 with a M42 mount.

This lens can be found on ebay for cheap!

All I needed to use it with my Canon 550D, or a nikon for that matter. Is a M42 to EOS/F adapter.
These you can find on ebay for cheap as well. You may want to get one with AF confirm. Though that isn’t essential.
AF confirm  allows your cameras focus mechanism to notify you when the image is in critical focus.
Have you got a good eye or a monitor you shouldn’t need AF confirm, and can save $5-6.

Now you are probably wondering just how good the Pentacon fares against it’s modern day competitors.
So i did a little test with a color and lens test chart.

Test: Comparing 50mm lenses

All pictures were taken on manual focus.Aperture of f1.8, shutter speed of 200 and iso 800 (not ideal, but it was dark).

I don’t claim to be a professional in lens and color charts but to me it looks like the Canon 1.4 turns out to be the sharpest here. (Note: shot using 20x zoom in live view on manual focus)
-Canon f1.4(at f1.8)                   4/5
-Canon f1.8                                  2/5
-Pentacon f1.8                             3/5

-Canon f1.4(at f1.8)                  5/5
-Canon f1.8                                  3/5
-Pentacon f1.8                             2/5
Fringing(i know there is got to be a proper term for this, those pink bands you get around the edges 😛 )
-Canon f1.4(at f1.8)                   3/5
-Canon f1.8                                  2/5
-Pentacon f1.8                             2/5The Pentacon obviously doesn’t top the scores. But for the price it is an absolutely great lens!
